Final Photos of Book Cover

To present my final piece in a professional way I printed off the book cover. This was so i could take pictures of it and capture the details from every angle. It was also nice to be able to hold the final product and see the result up close.

Colour Scheme

Shown below is my working progress sketch for the colour scheme. Here is the first sketch of the drawing which I scanned into Photoshop to add colour. I gained inspiration for this drawing from looking at pinterest and fantasy drawings

Work in progress

I created the colour scheme pieces in Photoshop as shown below. Here is a screenshot of the Analogous piece being created.

Monochromatic

I used the colour green for my monochromatic as I thought this would relate to my gardening theme. This is were you choose one colour and use any shade from that one colour, being to extremely dark green to the lightest shade. Monochromatic is where you choose one colour from the colour wheel and use colours from that one colour.

Analogous

I used the colours purple, pink and a hot pink for my analogue colour scheme as these colours would suit the fantasy and feminine theme of the picture. Also I thought these three colours suited each other really well. Analogous is where you select three colours on the colour wheel next to each other/ in a row, and can use any shade out of that colour.

Triadic

I used the colours mustard yellow, pink and a mint green for my triadic colour scheme as these colours work really well together and create a lovely picture when using the lighter shades  Also I thought these three colours suited the gardening/ fantasy theme. You can use any shade from that a colour, being to extremely dark green to the lightest shade. Triadic is where you select three colours on the colour wheel that are opposite each other.

Complimentary

I used the colours orange and sky blue for my complimentary colour scheme as these colours work really well together as the different shades blend in and are easy on the eye. You can use any shade from a colour, being to extremely dark green to the lightest shade. Complimentary is where you select two colours on the colour wheel that are opposite each other.

Contact Sheet

My intentions of the shoot were to capture elements of my garden so to obtain inspiration for my cover.  As on the cover of my book I am having a variety of hand drawn elements which are associated with gardening – e.g. garden gnomes, animals, gardening tools, plants etc. So going around my garden and capturing wildlife, tools and plants helped obtain ideas of what I should draw.

The successful parts for the shoot was that the pictures were of good quality and focus, had interesting choices of subject matter and had different angles and depths of field.
However the unsuccessful elements were that I was unable to capture a variety of animals, as it was winter/spring when I took them so very little wildlife was available.
If I were to take these images again I would include images of more insects, animals and so that It related more to gardening and that I had more inspiration of what to draw.

Overall I included a wide variety of subject matter and provided a set of good quality photos, so I therefore do not feel the need to take any more photos as I am happy with the ones I have and have obtained ideas for my bookcover.

CRAP Analysis

Our next task was to annotate two books on the different elements they have. I chose Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer. I did these two as both are opposite genres, from different eras, different audiences and opposite designs, therefore making it a good opportunity to compare them both. I ensured to choose books with dust covers so that I could annotate the contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity of the whole book cover.

Drafting

Here is one of the final drafts for the front of my book cover. I included the name of the book, the drawings I have created for it, the main graphic detail for front. Below the drafts I included what the background will consist of, experimented with type and the main shape choices in which the title will be presented on.

Digital Type Board

Here is my digital type board. We were set this task to expand our knowledge of the variety of types and narrow the margin of what type to use for our book cover. I circled the ones I thought suited my theme and would consider using for my final product. I also annotated each typeface as to if it is suitable for my book cover, why it is, positive and negative things, what type of font it is and if it doesn't suit my book cover I put what pieces it would suit.

Own Typeface

To get inspiration for creating my own type I viewed fonts on Dafont. This website holds a wide base of fonts and I viewed the handwritten ones as i felt these would fit the theme of my children book. I liked the thin hand drawn ones as these were childlike and would appeal to the target audience.

I used a dip pen to create my type and added swirls to each of the ends to add character and originality. Also this type appeals to the target audience as it is messy and childlike.

I then placed the drawn pieces of type in Photoshop and edited the levels so to make the document black and white. To separate the letters I removed the white with the magic wand tool so I could just have the black letters.

I then added a background and created drawings which I coloured in on Photoshop to go on the page to add character and originality to the type. Also the drawings fit in with the theme of gardening allowing me to use them on our book cover. I then aligned all the type so it was neat and proffessional.

I duplicated the garden drawings on the top and bottom of the page so to create a sense of continuity on the piece. I then set up ruler lines so I could place the letters on the lines so they were all neat and in line.  I also included other symbols, numbers and lower case so to broaden the options of the type and make it professional.

Moodboards - Pictures & Type

Our next task was to create a mood board and put together pictures which relate to our theme. My theme is a gardening book aimed at children, therefore I chose things you would typically find in a garden and items that would appear to children. This was done to set the scene of our theme and to help influence the types we choose. I then put together I page of fonts I liked and fonts that I thought fitted with my theme as seen below. I found these fonts off Dafont, most of the fonts I chose are predominatley sans serif and look handwritten. this is because they appeal to the target audience and are easy to read for children.

Emulation Of Artist Copy

This was the artist piece I chose to copy. I found this piece of artwork off Pinterest and decided to copy it as I liked the messy style and the originality of the piece. Also I do not use watercolours very much so it was a good practise and good to experiment with new materials.

Emulation

Here is my final piece for my emulation. I emulated the water colour bird and did a toadstool as i though this would fit the theme of my gardening book and I could potentially use it on my final piece. I used watercolours to create this piece and used pinterest for inspiration on what to paint. To make the image similar to the watercolour bird I used the same style of background and copied the runs of paint.
